FW7: Talking To My High School Self

16 10 2008

If I could talk to my high school self I would probably warn him to prepare for a change of scenery. I would want to make him less comfortable with where he was and all his friends because in a matter of months that is gone and you have to start all over and rebuild that comfort zone that you spent eighteen years of your life building. I would also tell him to be smart and go to a community college knowing that your going to transfer to Geneseo after the fall semester- It would of saved him a whole lot of money. The biggest thing I would tell him was to keep an open and positive view. It took seven weeks into college and an amazing girl to finally make me realize what he was doing wrong and how if he just made the most of college it would be that much better for him. As for talking to myself in high school or warning myself against doing something- I don’t think I would do anything different. Sure there were a few things I goofed up or a few tests I should of studied harder for, but thats High School and I really would not of chose to change anything even if I could.

FW6:Favorite Toy

7 10 2008

This is probably the hardest decision for me ever to make. I love toys and I feel like the toys of the 90′s were pretty amazing. One of my favorite toys was my robocop action figure. I was about seven or eight and we were opening presents on christmas. My brother just opened one to discover he had received an Arnold Swarzenager action figure from Terminator 2 that stood about a foot tall. I gazed over at his action figure and was immediately jealous and started ripping through my presents because I assumed that we would get the same thing because we are twins so thats usually the case. Finally I opened my present that was similar in size to his terminator action figure and I saw the robocop doll. At first I was still a little upset because I loved terminator but Rococop was pretty bad ass too. I found out that robocop had a great feature that when you pushed in the side of his calf a compartment holding his pistol would come out. My brother and I would battle with our action figures for hours and it was always such a blast. I don’t know whatever happen to my doll but I would kill to have that thing back it was just so cool.

How might gender tv help define or construct our ideologies of gender?

Television is constantly helping to construct ideas of gender. Commercials for cars are commonly advertised towards men because men are typically the decision makers when it comes to purchases for a household. Also, men are commonly given a first person point of view, especially in alcohol commercials with attractive women, so that it will satisfy men and appeal to their fantasy of being with a women with no commitment. Women are constantly being attacked by diet ads because diets and the overall concern of ones attractiveness seems to be a common concern for women. Also, women as the “marked” sex must always be competing with other women, so in society it is often viewed that the skinnier or more attractive girl “wins”. Most commercials for household products are advertised to women because most often they are housewives that stay home and maintain the house. Even the timing of commercials….commercials viewed towards women are during the day (when the household moms are watching their television shows) and most television shows aimed at men are played during sporting events or the weekend (when the men have time or are actually watching television).

FW5: Waking Up As Someone Famous

25 09 2008

I wake up and open my eyes to see a very lavish and expensive bedroom. The sun is barely coming up and I need to rush to get ready for practice. I throw on all my blue, red, and white football gear and head to practice. My muscles are sore from the game on sunday and we are going easy in practice to get ready for the next game. I throw on my jersey and get ready to take some handoffs. I take a handoff and break to the outside only to be challenged by a linebacker. I throw in a quick stutter step and then I turn on the jets and make it to the outside before he can catch me. All he can see is the number 23 getting farther and farther away from him. It’s a beautiful day in Orchard Park and there is no better feeling then taking a couple handoffs at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Best Food is Near Buffalo!

23 09 2008

This weekend I went home and I must say it was awesome to take a break from saga. Ever since I’ve been here at Hobart I have been on a pretty strict diet trying to shed my old football weight since I am not playing anymore and also staying as far away from that damn freshman fifteen as possible. But I must say…when I went home this weekend it was an absolute shit show- I ate everything.

My first binge of the weekend was at Olive Garden with my girlfriend and a few of our friends. This was pretty good but nothing too special. The breadsticks at that place are unreal though. I mean what makes them just so good? I must of ate at least ten of those bad boys on top of salad and cheese ravioli.

Then next place I went to was every Western New Yorker’s paradise: Mighty Taco. Mighty taco is a taco fast food place located in Orchard Park and a few other places throughout Western New York. To give you a little idea of the location, I live in East Aurora which is about 40 minutes outside of Buffalo. Orchard Park is the town over from East Aurora and it is about 15 minutes away….aka the closest mighty taco near my hometown (not for long because in november my town is getting a Mighty Taco). People may wonder whats the big deal about this mighty taco? Well it probably the best and most fake mexican food you will ever eat. It has become apart of many high schoolers weekends in my town to visit the local mighty taco, which is open until 2 a.m. Whenever a person from East Aurora goes into the Mighty Taco in Orchard Park they are almost bound to see someone from their town because everyone loves Mighty! It was very much apart of the social scene in my high school, a place to get some good food and establish a game plan for the night.

This fast food restaurant is so popular that my friends even made a movie about the infamous “mighty run” as we call it. A mighty run is what we call it when people take the 15 minute trip into Orchard Park just to get some tacos. This is a video of my friends infamous mighty run….it really is nothing like a mighty run because the guy doesn’t go in a car as we usually do, it just shows the ridiculous lengths people will go for some Mighty!

Another thing that the buffalo area has that can’t be beat our wings. They don’t call em’ buffalo wings for nothing! You can’t go to buffalo or the buffalo area without trying the chicken wings. Nothing compares…they put Marks wings to shame. We have a small little bar in my town called the bar bill that has some of the best wings around. Nothing beats our wings!

Also, two more local restaurants that are equally as impressive are Jim’s Steak Out and Ted’s Hot Dogs. Jim’s isn’t as famous as Ted’s but Jim’s is the place to go for amazing subs. It is open until 5 in the morning I think in Buffalo, so this is a favorite for people winding down on their not of binge drinking or for the stoners who have the munchies.

Ted’s is a very famous hot dog place. It’s got some of the best hot dogs around and you just can’t beat a footlong hot dog with cheese and a chocolate shake.

Now really I only ate at two of the places I talked about over the weekend: Olive Garden and Mighty. But I have to suggest that anyone that travels in the Buffalo area must stop by and have some food at one of these restaurants. Especially Mighty it’s like a Taco Bell on steroids! So it’s safe to say I had a wonderful weekend going back to my home town of East Aurora and stuffing my face with some REAL food hahaha.

FW4: Corn Dog Movie

18 09 2008

My corn dog movie is Terminator 2. For some reason whenever it’s on I just can’t change the channel even though I have seen it easily over ten times. The movie is a classic and ever since I watched it when I was about 8 with my older brothers I fell in love with it.  The whole plot line was brilliant, which I failed to understand until I was older. It was just such a bad ass movie. Arnold Schwarzenagher played the perfect hero as he fought to destroy the T1000. Everything about that movie was intense and constantly kept you on the edge of your seat with the never ending action scenes. My favorite part is at the end where Arnold (The Terminator) and the T1000 are fighting in the metal factory. I love the part when Arnold is temporarily shut down because he gets the stake through his stomach and then comes back to life out of nowhere to rescue Sarah and John Connor.

FW3- I like being a man because….

16 09 2008

I like being a man because I don’t have to deal with all the drama that girls typically are involved in. I enjoy the fact that there are certain sports I can play, such as football because if I was a girl I would not be able to play or at least not be able to play that without facing many hardships. Another perk of being a guy is that I can be a total slob and it’s totally acceptable and almost expected of me. The fact that I also don’t have to bear a child and go through a painful pregnancy isn’t too bad either.
